I handle purchasing for a security company. Not a giant one: 60 to 65 people across two locations. - Class A (green triangle): ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth.
- Class B (red square): flammable liquids and gases, including gasoline, solvents, and oil.
- Class C (blue circle): energized electrical equipment.
- Class D (yellow star): combustible metals such as magnesium and titanium, mostly in industrial settings.
- Class K (black hexagon): commercial cooking oils and fats.
Most offices use an ABC dry chemical unit because it covers ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires. In a commercial kitchen you want a Class K unit. In a maintenance shop with metalworking, you may need Class D. And never mount a water-based unit where electrical hazards exist. Use the label to match the unit to the room; if it does not match, flag it.

Check 1: Is the extinguisher actually reachable?
This sounds obvious, but we have found units behind stacked boxes and around the corner from their designated area. Confirm nothing blocks access, that the bracket holds it firmly, and that it is visible. A unit hidden behind a door or inside a supply closet is not an accessible extinguisher.
Check 2: Pull pin, tamper seal, and pressure gauge
The pin should still be through the handle and the plastic tamper seal should be intact. If the seal is broken or missing, someone may have handled it. That is a flag even if the unit looks charged.
Next, the gauge. The needle should be in the green zone. In the red on the left means undercharged; in the red on the right means over-pressurized. Both go on the service list.
Check 3: Look for damage, corrosion, and leaks
Run your eyes over the entire shell, not just the front. Look for dents, rust, and powdery residue around the valve, hose, or nozzle. Check the hose for cracks, especially small ones near the coupling. The bottom of the shell is a weak point because water and road salt collect under the bracket.
Check 4: Verify the service tag and paperwork
According to OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(e)(2), portable fire extinguishers must be visually inspected at least monthly, and the same standard requires annual maintenance (Source: OSHA, 1910.157). NFPA 10 follows the same pattern. The tag should show a recent annual service date.
If the tag is missing or the date is old, treat the unit as unserviceable until a certified technician inspects it. I do not guess on this one.
Check 5: Match the symbols and extinguisher class to the actual room
Use the symbol guide above. Make sure the extinguisher in the server room is not a water unit and that the kitchen unit is actually Class K. I also make sure the smallest extinguisher on the property is still appropriate for the distance to larger fire equipment — this is where a licensed fire protection company earns their fee.
Check 6: Check the environment, not just the extinguisher
This is the step most people skip because the extinguisher might look fine on the day of inspection. Ask what happens to it all year.
- Vehicle mounts bake in summer heat and vibrate constantly.
- Coastal and chemical environments corrode metal shells faster than ordinary office air.
- Outdoor mounts are exposed to rain, UV, and temperature swings.
- Units near furnaces, compressors, or other heat sources are at higher risk.
If the location does not suit the unit, relocation or another type is better than annual polishing.
Can a fire extinguisher explode?
Yes, a fire extinguisher can explode, but in most real cases it happens after long-visible warning signs are ignored. A stored-pressure unit is a pressurized container. Corrosion, a deep dent, a cracked valve, or exposure to severe heat can weaken the shell enough that pressure finds a way out violently. When that happens, the top of the cylinder can become a projectile.
The over-pressurized gauge reading is a warning. Corrosion on the bottom is a warning. An extinguisher that has been through a fire or has obvious damage should be removed from service, not tested by squeezing the handle. Recharging and hydrostatic testing are jobs for a licensed professional. If you suspect a unit is compromised, isolate it outdoors and call your fire equipment company.
Common extinguisher mistakes I have learned the hard way
One that still bothers me: in 2024 I found a cracked hose on a vehicle extinguisher during a routine inventory. It had been mounted in that patrol truck for roughly three years, baking and freezing by turns. Nobody had inspected the hose properly; the gauge was fine. If someone had needed that unit, the discharge would have sprayed through the crack. I replaced the hose, and now the hose gets a deliberate look every month.
- Do not test an extinguisher by squeezing the handle. Even a brief discharge loosens the seal and wastes dry chemical.
- Do not paint a cylinder. Paint hides corrosion and voids manufacturer approval.
- Do not trust a no-name extinguisher from an unknown marketplace seller just because the price is low.
- Do not skip annual professional maintenance to save a few dollars. The invoice from a certified company is cheaper than liability.
