In February 2022, I got the budget for a twelve-person security team expansion. Boots, bags, eyewear, hard hats, fire extinguishers — the full loadout. The number looked workable until I priced it out. Then it didn't.

The fix: three questions before any purchase
Here's the checklist I now use for every equipment order. It's short because the problem was never the buying process — it was the thinking before the buying.
1. Run the lifecycle math. Divide price by expected service life. A $155 pair of boots that lasts 19 months ($8.16/month) beats a $117 pair that lasts six ($19.50/month). It's not complicated. You just have to do it before you buy, not after you regret.

And one bonus from the shipping side: USPS pricing changes roughly twice a year — as of January 2025, First-Class letter postage is $0.73 — but the shipping cost lesson applies to any carrier.
